The grants are targeted to organizations that tackle community issues, curriculum development and environmental health issues.
"Environmental education teaches our us how to create a cleaner environment for the future," said Robert W. The New Haven Ecology Project, received $5,000 to building on an earlier successful Earth Day event. Some 300 to 400 students in grades 1-4 are expected to participate in the project in which participants learn about ecosystem protection, water/air/diesel pollution, hazardous waste recycling, nutrient recycling, natural resources, and neighborhood environmental stewardship.
The Yale University/Peabody Museum of Natural History received $34,945 to partner with local schools, the National Marine Fisheries Service and the sate Department of Environmental Protection for an after-school and summer program. The program, called Gaining Early Awareness & Readiness for Undergraduate Programs, lets middle and high school students explore the natural and environmental sciences while learning about related majors and careers.
