EPA supports Environmental Education projects in ND

Denver -- Continuing its commitment to increase understanding of the importance of protecting the environment, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) funded three environmental education (EE) projects in North Dakota this year.

"These grants help students and teachers develop their capacity to make informed decisions that affect environmental quality," Regional Administrator Robbie Roberts said, "These kinds of hands-on projects involve students of all ages and promote the understanding that we are inextricably connected to and dependent on the environment."

Interactive Children=s Water Festival

The Dakota Science Center will hold an Interactive Children's Water Festival to raise community awareness of the importance of water resources. Through hands-on activities and interactive demonstrations, students will directly explore how water affects their lives and their environment. The goal is to increase the wise use and protection of this precious resource.

AEarth Wellness@ Environmental Festival

Gateway to Science will hold its fourth annual AEarth Wellness@ Environmental Festival in May, 2003 with hands-on activities for fifth grade teachers and their students in order to increase their understanding of how their actions can affect the environment, either positively or negatively. In addition, this festival will expand to include a greater number of participants.

Inter-active Mouse River Loop Envirothon Stewards

The regional Envirothon in north central North Dakota will help students develop a stronger grasp of their roles as stewards of North Dakota=s natural resources. This Envirothon will be a model for other Environthons to be developed within the state. The main objective is to combine in-class curriculum with hands-on field experience concerning the management of natural resources. This will be accomplished by working with numerous partners and the National Canon Envirothon format to create a positive event for students and teachers in a multi-county area. The educational priorities will address educational reform, teaching skills, and career development. Our target audience is students between the ages of 15-18 years old and high school vocational teachers.
