$1,146,000 Grant to Chautauqua County, Kan., for Water Infrastructure

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Kansas City, Kan., October 5, 2009) - EPA has awarded $1,146,000 to Rural Water District No. 4 (RWD #4) of Chautauqua County, Kan., for expansion of its drinking water distribution system.
"EPA is proud to award these water infrastructure funds which will help expand the District’s water system," said William Rice, acting regional administrator. "Water infrastructure is a basic necessity for community health and prosperity."
RWD #4 is a new water district serving most of the eastern half of Chautauqua County, Kan. The existing private wells are of poor quality and provide inadequate quantity of water. The grant will help fund the construction of 56 miles of pipeline to provide safe drinking water to 78 additional users.
EPA oversees the protection of water quality and public health. The Agency is working with community leaders and the public to meet the growing needs and demands of our limited water resources. EPA remains committed to developing innovative and sustainable solutions for managing and financing infrastructure with public and private partners.
