CHICAGO (Nov. 21, 2006) - U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Region 5 today announced two upcoming meetings on the South Minneapolis Neighborhood Soil Contamination Superfund site in Minneapolis.
A monthly update meeting on the arsenic-contaminated soil removal effort will be held 7 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 28 at the YWCA, 2121 E. Lake St. Representatives from EPA, and state and local agencies, will be available to answer questions about the ongoing project. Monthly meetings at the YWCA during early 2007 have also been scheduled for Jan. 30, Feb. 27 and March 27.
On a separate track from the update meetings, an informal meeting to explore the formation of a Community Advisory Group will be held 7 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 12, at the YWCA. Once established, the community group will meet regularly to review and comment on technical documents and plans related to the environmental studies and cleanup activities at the site.
Community members with questions about the CAG process or who need special accommodations at these meetings may contact Community Involvement Coordinator Cheryl Allen at (800) 621-8431, Ext. 36196, 9 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. weekdays. Information on the South Minneapolis site is on the Web at https://www.epa.gov/region5/sites/cmcheartland.
The South Minneapolis site encompasses a number of neighborhoods near the intersection of 28th Street and Hiawatha Avenue, where the CMC Heartland Lite Yard was located from about 1938 to 1963. A pesticide containing arsenic was produced there and material from an open-air railcar-unloading and product-mixing operation is believed to have been wind-blown into nearby neighborhoods.
