EPA Awards Environmental Education Grants in Louisiana

     The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced that three Louisiana projects have been selected to receive nearly $11,000 in Environmental Education grants.

     This annual grant program was designed to promote environmental awareness and responsibility at the grass roots level. Approximately three million dollars will be awarded nationwide this year.

     "Region 6 received more than 100 applications for this year’s grant competition and more than $200,000 has been awarded for environmental education projects in the five-state region. This response underscores the concern citizens throughout Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas have for improving and preserving our environment," EPA Regional Administrator Gregg Cooke said.

     Citizens for a Clean Tangipahoa in Hammond was awarded $4,975 for workshops to educate more than 1,300 second-grade students about recycling.

     The same group will receive $1,000 to create portable displays illustrating the ecology and history of the Tangipahoa River. The displays will educate students and adults about the damage pollution has caused in and along this important waterway and how citizens can protect this valuable resource.

     Grayson Elementary School in Grayson will receive $5,000 to create an Outdoor Classroom with nature trails, observation platforms, weather stations and specific areas to study water, soil and wildlife. High school students will serve as mentors for almost 400 elementary students as they participate in a variety of hands-on learning experiences.

     Educational institutions, state and tribal environmental or educational agencies, and nonprofit organizations, including public broadcasting agencies, are eligible to apply for Environmental Education grants.
