Cedartown Industries, Inc., Superfund Site Deleted from Superfund National Priorities List

(ATLANTA – September 18, 2006) The Cedartown Industries, Inc., Superfund Site (the Site) in Cedartown, Ga., has been deleted from the EPA Superfund National Priorities List (NPL) of hazardous waste sites. EPA and the state of Georgia have determined that the Site poses no significant threat to public health or the environment and, therefore, no further cleanup measures are appropriate.

EPA identifies sites that present a significant risk to public health, welfare, or the environment and it maintains the NPL as the list of those sites. Any site deleted from the NPL remains eligible for cleanup actions in the unlikely event that conditions at the Site warrant such action. The Site conditions will continue to be monitored through five-year reviews conducted by EPA.

The Cedartown Industries Site is a seven acre site which was formerly used as a secondary lead smelting business from 1978 to 1980. High levels of lead and cadmium were identified at the Site, and in 1990, contaminated slag, storage piles, wastewater and sediment were removed. Groundwater contamination from metals has been treated through natural processes, and monitoring results of the groundwater indicate continued reduction of contaminants.
