DUPONT OF MEXICO SUPPORTS ENVIRONMENTAL PARTNERSHIP
Demonstrating that sound environmental stewardship, sustainable development and free trade are compatible, DuPont of Mexico has agreed to the US/Mexico Seven Principles of Environmental Stewardship for the 21st Century. DuPont of Mexico also endorsed the Environmental Management System (EMS) Guidance Document of the North American Commission for Environmental Cooperation (CEC). The Seven Principles and the CEC
EMS Document provide public and private sector leaders with tools for promoting corporate environmental stewardship and sustainability practices in the U.S., Canada and Mexico. The Seven Principles are a collaborative effort among the environmental agencies of the three countries, the U.S.-Mexico Chamber of Commerce, and the Border Environment Cooperation Commission (BECC) which was established under NAFTA. Ten additional major U.S. and Mexican trade associations and environmental groups have endorsed the Seven Principles. The Principles advocate voluntary private sector actions that go beyond compliance with environmental laws through incorporation of environmental management systems and auditing programs, to achieve pollution prevention, energy efficiency and improved environmental performance. Companies are encouraged to disseminate emissions information to the public, to work together to improve environmental performance and to invest in local sustainable development where the company operates. The CEC guidance document on EMS’s, endorsed by the environment ministers of the United States, Mexico and Canada, outlines how EMSs can be effectively designed to serve the public policy goals of improving environmental compliance, overall environmental performance and stakeholder involvement and outlines in greater detail the concept of performance-oriented environmental management presented in the Seven Principles.
