EPA awards grant to Wisconsin Center for environmental education

CHICAGO (July 27, 2005) — U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Region 5 has awarded a $9,975 environmental education grant to the Wisconsin Center for Environmental Education, Stevens Point, in support of the Wisconsin - Puerto Rico Environmental Education Exchange Project. The program is delivered through Global Environmental Teachings, which aims to connect K-12 educators worldwide through environmental education.
Sixteen organizations in EPA Region 5 states received $194,900 in environmental education grants this year. More than 130 proposals were received from groups in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio and Wisconsin.
The Wisconsin ( Puerto Rico exchange began last week with wetlands field studies in Stevens Point. This week, 15 teachers from Puerto Rico and 10 from across Wisconsin will be visiting the Ashland area. The visit will include a trip tothe Northern Great Lakes Visitor Center, a natural history interpretive hike at Copper Falls State Park and a boat tour of the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore.
The EPA grants are awarded annually under the National Environmental Education Act. The act was passed in 1990 to stimulate environmental education by supporting design, demonstration and communication projects conceived by local organizations.
