EPA Administrator Carol M. Browner
7/30/98
The Tennessee Valley Authority, one of the nation’s largest power providers, today announced its plans to dramatically cut smog-causing nitrogen oxide emissions from its power plants by the year 2003. We at EPA strongly commend their leadership in helping not only to fight smog in Tennessee and neighboring states like Kentucky and Alabama, but also “down wind” in other parts of the country.
Smog can contribute to impaired lung function in millions of people and can aggravate asthma attacks in thousands of our children. By reducing nitrogen oxides from electrical utilities, we will be able to meet EPA’s new protective health standards without the need for additional controls in most cases.
