EPA Administrator Appoints Alan J. Steinberg as Region 2 Administrator

(#05096) NEW YORK -- Administrator Stephen L. Johnson of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has appointed Alan J. Steinberg as the new Region 2 Administrator, who will be responsible for managing Agency programs covering New Jersey, New York, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands and seven Tribal Nations.
"I am pleased to announce the appointment of Alan J. Steinberg to serve as Region 2 Administrator," said Administrator Johnson. "Alan has a wealth of experience with environmental issues in the Region 2 area and I look forward to working with him to protect the human health and environment of the region." Steinberg served under former EPA Administrator and New Jersey Governor Christie Whitman as Executive Director of the New Jersey Meadowlands Commission. In that capacity, he was responsible for the environmental protection, orderly development, and solid waste management of the New Jersey Meadowlands. Most recently, he served in the Bush Administration as the Small Business Administration Office of Advocacy Region 2 Regional Advocate. "I am looking forward to this exciting and challenging opportunity to advance the Agency's mission of protecting human health and the environment for the benefit of all the citizens of New Jersey, New York, and the Caribbean," said Steinberg. Kathleen Callahan, who has been serving as Acting Regional Administrator since November 2004, will return to her former position as Deputy Regional Administrator. "Kathy has served admirably with EPA since 1971, and in the past several months, she has led the region's work in a number of important areas," said Johnson. "Kathy will resume her position as Deputy Regional Administrator and I appreciate her continued service to the Agency." Steinberg attended Northwestern University, B.A. 1971, University of Wisconsin Law School, J.D., 1974, and the Temple University School of Law, L.L.M. in Taxation, 1978. He also served as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy Judge Advocate General's Corps from 1974 to 1977. |
