EPA Proposes Site on Long Island Be Added To The Superfund National Priorities List

(#98089) NEW YORK, N.Y. -- The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)is proposing to add another site on Long Island, New York to the federal Superfund National Priorities List (NPL). The Computer Circuits site is an inactive facility on Marcus Boulevard in Hauppauge where poor housekeeping practices has led to chemical and heavy metal contamination in soils and groundwater. The site is located over a New York State designated Wellhead Protection Area. The proposed addition of the Computer Circuits site to the NPL brings the total number of federal Superfund sites in New York to 81.

The NPL is the federal list of the nation's worst hazardous waste sites. The Agency periodically proposes sites to the NPL and designates proposed sites as final. Proposed sites are investigated further to determine the extent of the risks they may pose to human health and the environment. Sites that are placed on the final NPL are eligible for long-term "remedial action" financed under the Superfund Trust Fund.

According to EPA Regional Administrator Jeanne M. Fox, "The proposed listing of the Computer Circuits site on Long Island will guarantee the completion of a comprehensive and permanent solution to the contamination at the site. Without Superfund, there are no assurances that contaminated sites like this one in communities throughout the country will be properly addressed."

Computer Circuits was a manufacturer of printed circuit boards for both military and commercial applications at the site from 1969 to 1977. Waste liquids from the manufacturing process were discharged into cesspools on the property. EPA sampling of subsurface soils on the site in 1996 indicated the presence of volatile organic compounds and inorganic constituents.
