Excavation to Resume at the St. Albans Gas and Light Site in Vermont

(Boston, Mass. – June 16, 2006) - EPA will begin work next week to remove contaminated soil from two residential properties located on Maple Street where the former St. Albans Gas and Light Company was once located in St. Albans, Vermont.

The site is the former location of the St. Albans Gas & Light Company, later known as the Vermont Lighting Company, which operated between 1870 and 1953. In 1971, the property was subdivided and developed for residential use.

An EPA investigation of the site in 2004 revealed that elevated levels of PAHs (poly aromatic hydrocarbons) were present in the surface soils. In 2005, EPA removed approximately 2,300 tons of contaminated soil from two properties and shipped the soil off-site for disposal at an authorized facility.

Over the next several weeks, EPA contractors will be re-grading and restoring the lawns on the two properties that were addressed last season. Concurrently, EPA will excavate contaminated soil from two additional residential properties.

Once excavation activities are completed at these properties, they too will be backfilled with clean soil, re-graded and re-vegetated. The cleanup costs for the project are estimated at $800,000.
