The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is now accepting applications for environmental education grants to be awarded in the fall 2004, EPA Regional Administrator  Richard E. Greene announced today.

"Our environment's future depends on our children's understanding of environmental issues and their ingenuity in creating solutions.  Environmental education projects that provide real world contexts and results are the best way to foster these abilities.  Environmental education grants help educators prepare to meet the environmental challenges we cannot yet foresee by arming our children and young people with these skills," Greene said.

Almost $200,000 is available to educational institutions, state agencies, tribal educational agencies, and nonprofit organizations, including public broadcasting agencies.  Applications must be postmarked no later than January 6, 2004. Region 6 is particularly seeking projects with tangible environmental improvement outcomes.

Many grants are awarded for $5,000 or less. Grants more than $25,000 are awarded by EPA's headquarters office. Complete information on applying for an environmental education grant is available on the Internet at https://www.epa.gov/enviroed/grants.html.
