EPA Cites Branchville Company for Violating Pesticide Law

BRANCHVILLE, Va. -  The U. S. Environmental Protection Agency cited Southampton Farm Supply, Inc., of Branchville, Va. for filing late and incomplete pesticide production reports in 1996 and 1997.

The agency, in its January 6, 1999 complaint, proposed an $11,000 penalty for the violations.  The EPA requires that companies that product pesticides submit annual reports that identify the pesticides produced and sold that year, as well as their quantities.

Southampton Farm Supply, Inc., is a Virginia-based corporation which conducts business throughout the state.  The company is a peanut warehouse, a wholesaler of fertilizers and chemicals, as well as a producer of pesticides.

"Regulatory requirements are designed to minimize the health and environmental threats posed by pesticide production.  By knowing how much of a pesticide is being produced and sold, EPA can better assess environmental risks," said John A. Armstead, EPA Director for the Waste and Chemicals Management Division, Region III.

The company is entitled to a hearing to contest the alleged violations and proposed penalty.
