WASHINGTON - EPA Administrator Lisa P. Jackson, Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood and Housing and Urban Development Secretary Shaun Donovan will visit Chicago, Dubuque, and Denver on a Sustainable Communities Tour on September 17 and 18, 2009. The officials will tour communities that have taken a comprehensive approach to improve access to affordable housing, provide more and less-costly transportation options, and protect the local environment for residents.
White House Director of Urban Affairs Adolfo Carrion will also join the tour in Chicago and Denver.
On Thursday, September 17 at 9:45 a.m., Chicago Mayor Richard Daley will join the group for a tour of the Bethel Center in West Garfield Park. At 11:45 a.m., Administrator Jackson, Secretary LaHood and Secretary Donovan will deliver keynote addresses at the Chicago Metropolitan Planning Council's 2009 annual luncheon.
The three officials will then fly to Dubuque, Iowa for a trolley tour and a visit to the Caradco Building at 4:00 p.m. The Caradco Building is a former warehouse being renovated for mixed income residential units and is part of the city’s efforts to transform the historic mill worker district. At 5:00 p.m. they will hold a town hall meeting with the public to discuss Dubuque’s sustainability agenda.
The tour continues in Denver on Friday, September 18. The group will be joined by Colorado Governor Bill Ritter and Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper for a 10:15 a.m. tour of the South Lincoln Park Homes, a housing complex the city is constructing as a model of sustainable growth. The tour will end with a White House Urban Affairs community forum focusing on sustainable communities in urban areas at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, September 18.
In June, EPA joined DOT and HUD in an interagency Partnership for Sustainable Communities. The partnership, working closely with the White House Domestic Policy Council, is focused on bringing a new level of interagency collaboration and ensuring that housing and transportation goals are met while simultaneously protecting the environment, promoting equitable development, and helping to address the challenges of climate change in rural, suburban and urban communities nationwide.
