Hurricane Katrina: Louisiana - EPA Response Update
Release Date: 9/21/2005
Contact Information: For more information contact the Office of External Affairs at (214) 665-2200.
As Hurricane Rita continues to move toward the Gulf of Mexico, much of the Hurricane Katrina response work has had to be suspended. In response to a FEMA mission request, EPA has deployed staff to the Regional Response Coordination Center in Austin.
EPA and LDEQ reconnaissance teams were able to access the Agriculture Street Landfill Superfund site yesterday. They determined that the cap was not compromised, although the area surrounding the site received major damage and many of the nearby homes were in shambles. Sampling will begin after Hurricane Rita passes through.
