Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University Awarded EPA Environmental Education Grant

PHILADELPHIA – The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency today announced 20 environmental education grants awarded throughout the mid-Atlantic region. In Blacksburg, Va. EPA awarded $5,000 to the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University.

The program EPA is funding is Career Development Through Virginia’s Service Training for Environmental Progress .

The project will place two college students, juniors or above, in a Virginia community in summer 2002 to work on a water-related issue identified by the community. By working on a largely self-directed project to help the community assess or understand and water-resource issue, the students will gain experience and skills in water resources, community organization, and public service.

“This environmental education program will help students and community members to understand more about local water resources,” said mid-Atlantic Regional Administrator Donald S. Welsh.

Since 1992, EPA has provided more than $2 million annually in funding to local organizations and schools and has awarded a total of 1,700 grants. These grass-roots grants fund educational programs in nonprofit organizations, educational institutions, and governmental agencies supporting a wide range of environmental issues for citizens of all ages.
