MAZDA RECALLS CARS FOR EXHAUST EMISSION PROBLEM
Mazda Motor Corp. will began recalling about 6,000 cars tomorrow that may exceed the Clean Air Act carbon monoxide (CO) emission standard. The affected models are the 1995 Mazda 626 and MX-6 with 2.5-liter engines with manual transmissions. Cars built to California standards are not included in the recall. EPA found levels of CO above the Federal limits during routine emissions testing and Mazda agreed to recall the vehicles. The automaker will increase the air into the intake manifold which will reduce the CO emissions. Carbon monoxide inhibits the blood’s capacity to carry oxygen to vital organs and tissue. People with heart disease are especially sensitive to carbon monoxide poisoning. Infants and others with respiratory problems also are very sensitive. Mazda will notify owners by letter. The cars will be repaired free of charge.
