EPA ADMINISTRATOR CHRISTIE WHITMAN PARTICIPATES IN WATER MONITORING EVENT WITH STUDENTS AT CONN GLOBAL COMMUNICATIONS MAGNET SCHOOL IN RALEIGH, NORTH CAROLINA

EPA Administrator Christie Whitman, in commemoration of the 30th Anniversary of the Clean Water Act and Year of Clean Water, today participated in a water event with fifth graders at Conn Global Communications Magnet School in Raleigh, North Carolina. During the event, Whitman praised the school's "Stream Team" for their efforts to monitor the water in the stream near their school and for their active role in understanding the importance of clean water. "The anniversary of the Clean Water Act is an opportunity to renew our commitment to providing Americans with pure, healthy water, while at the same time focusing the nation's attention on the new water quality challenges we face," said EPA Administrator Whitman. "Water plays an important role in all of our lives, and each of us has a responsibility and an opportunity to be a part of keeping our water clean." Whitman, joined by the school's Assistant Principal Valgean Mitchell and teacher Leah Perry-Lawless, presented the students with a water testing kit which will assist them in testing the pH levels, water clarity, dissolved oxygen, and temperature to determine water conditions in the stream. Whitman praised the landmark Clean Water Act legislation, enacted 30 years ago on Oct. 18, 1972 and stressed the importance of continuing the important work of protecting the nation's water. "I know that if we continue to work together we can ensure that 30 years from now B when the Clean Water Act turns 60 B we will be celebrating a successful legacy of clean water for this and future generations," said Whitman.
