EPA and DOJ extend public comment period for agreement with S.H. BELL on clean-air violations

CHICAGO (Feb. 22, 2008) - U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Justice have extended the public comment period for a proposed agreement with S.H. Bell Co. on alleged clean-air violations at the company's facility in the East Liverpool, Ohio, area. The public will now have through March 10 to submit comments.

S.H. Bell operates its Stateline Terminal at 2217 Michigan Ave. and its Little England Terminal at 1 Saint George St. Portions of the Stateline Terminal are in the state of Pennsylvania. S.H. Bell operates material handling and temporary storage space for ferrous and nonferrous materials for industry at both plants.

The agreement includes a $50,000 penalty and two environmental projects costing $386,592. When it becomes final, it will resolve federal allegations that S.H. Bell failed to comply with permitting and testing requirements of the Clean Air Act.

In addition to agreeing to comply with all state and federal regulations, S.H. Bell will build a truck loadout shed and complete two road-paving projects totaling 14,850 square feet to capture and control particulate emissions.
