ACCOUNTANT PLEADS GUILTY IN SLUDGE CASE
Jeffrey Turbedsky of Houston, Texas, former accounting manager of BFI Services Group in Westchester, Pa., a Browning-Ferris Industries subsidiary, pleaded guilty on Sept. 15 to violating the Clean Water Act in U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. The charges resulted from the improper disposal of millions of gallons of mixed raw sewage, grease and concentrated treated wastewater sludge, which was sent to astewater treatment plants after it had been falsely identified as diluted raw sewage. When sentenced, Turbedsky faces a maximum of up to five years imprisonment and/or a maximum fine of $250,000. The case was investigated by EPA’s Criminal Investigation Division and the FBI with the assistance of EPA’s National Enforcement Investigations Center.
