NEWARK - The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has awarded a $5,000 grant to the University of Delaware to develop a training program for children throughout Delaware about the importance of soil, water and nutrient management.

Under the project, university faculty will develop lessons, hands-on learning activities and community related projects geared to teach children ages eight to 12 about nutrient management. Nutrient management is especially important in the Delmarva Peninsula because of the large number of chicken farms that can contribute to polluted runoff. The program will also train high school students and adult volunteers on how to run the workshops and activities.

“Young people today have a tremendous interest in the environment and by exposing them to this issue, it can only help lead to smart decision-making in the future,” said Bradley Campbell, regional administrator for EPA’s mid-Atlantic region.

EPA’s education grant program is designed to stimulate grass-roots environmental education. Nationally, EPA awarded more than $2.3 million in environmental education grants in 2000 to schools, civic groups and non-profit organizations.
