OZONE PROTECTION PROGRAM SETTLEMENT REACHED
EPA reached a $3.5 million settlement agreement with Meyer’s Bakery, a large commercial bakery based in Little Rock, Ark., for Clean Air Act violations. The company allowed thousands of pounds of refrigerant to leak from appliances without performing required repairs. The violations occurred at Meyer’s facilities in: Hope, Ark.; Arizona City, Ariz.; Orlando, Fla.; Wichita, Kan.; and Cleburne, Texas. Clean Air Act regulations require certain types of industrial facilities to repair leaks from appliances that exceed a 35 percent leak rate. Meyer’s service logs revealed that leak rates were greater than 58 percent and as high as 22,531 percent. These high leak rates resulted in the release of thousands of pounds of ozone depleting substances into the atmosphere. The settlement was filed on Sept. 11, in U.S. District Court in Fort Smith, Ark. For further information, contact EPA Region 6 at 214-665-2200.
