CHICAGO (Dec. 6, 2006) - U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Indiana Department of Environmental Management and the Hammond Sanitary District will hold a meeting to discuss the development of a plan to clean up contaminated sediment in the West Branch of the Grand Calumet River using Great Lakes Legacy Act and Natural Resources Damage Assessment funds. The meeting will be held at Hammond Public Library, Community Room, 564 State St., on Monday, Dec. 11, from 6 to 8 p.m.
Congress passed and the president signed the Great Lakes Legacy Act of 2002 to address the problem of contaminated sediment in 31 toxic hot spots known as "areas of concern" around the Great Lakes. The act authorizes $270 million in funding over five years, beginning in fiscal year 2004.
