REMINDER: EPA TO HOLD OPEN HOUSE AND INFORMATIONAL MEETING TONIGHT TO DISCUSS THE NUCLEAR METALS SUPERFUND SITE

Boston- The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is hosting an open house followed by a public information meeting TONIGHT, Wednesday, September 19th beginning at 7:00 pm at the Alcott School on Laurel Street to discuss the current status and future clean-up activities at the Nuclear Metals Superfund Site. The site is located at 2229 Main Street in Concord, MA and is now known as Starmet Corporation.

The Nuclear Metals site was added to the National Priorities List (NPL or Superfund) in June of 2001. The NPL is EPA's list of the country's most serious hazardous waste sites identified for possible long-term cleanup. The Superfund program makes public funds available to clean up listed toxic waste sites when private financing is unavailable.

In 1958, Nuclear Metals Inc. began operating a manufacturing facility on the previously undeveloped land, producing depleted uranium products primarily as penetrators for armor piercing ammunition for the Army. The company also made metal powders for medical applications and photocopiers as well as other specialty metal products. From 1958 until 1985, when the company changed its manufacturing process, NMI discharged wastes containing a variety of toxic metals into an unlined holding basin onsite. It ceased manufacturing penetrators for the military in 1999.
