EPA RELEASES DRAFT GUIDANCE FOR DRINKING WATER
SOURCE ASSESSMENT AND PROTECTION
SOURCE ASSESSMENT AND PROTECTION
As a pollution prevention initiative, the 1996 Safe Drinking Water Act provides for additional protections for surface and groundwater sources of public drinking water supplies. The new law requires states to inventory and evaluate known and potential sources of all public drinking water supplies. The law also provides funding for this effort and for the implementation of protection programs. Under the law, EPA must issue guidance for the state assessment and protection programs by August 6. EPA has recently released a draft of this guidance and is asking for public comment by June 13. The draft guidance describes requirements for state source water assessment programs, with a strong public participation component, describes state options for implementing protection programs and discusses the many links with other EPA and federal programs. The Agency is holding a series of public meetings around the country on the guidance in April and May. For copies of the guidance and additional information, the general public can call EPA's Safe Drinking Water Hotline at 1-800-426-4791 or visit EPA's web site at https://www.epa.gov/ogwdw/sswadg.html, for the guidance only; or at https://www.epa.gov/ogwdw/sdwa/sdwa.html for additional information.
