CIRCUIT PROSECUTOR PROGRAM INITIATED IN CALIFORNIA
On March 13, EPA, the State of California and the California District Attorneys’ Association (CDAA) announced a joint training effort to support the assignment of five regional environmental “circuit prosecutors” who will coordinate and provide training and education to existing multi-county environmental task forces. CDAA’s Circuit Prosecutor Project will provide 32 rural District Attorney’s Offices with assistance in providing needed staff training and in addressing specific cases. The Project came about because the increased cooperation among CDAA, the California Environmental Protection Agency, EPA, and several U.S. Attorney’s Offices has resulted in many California counties experiencing significant increases in the number of environmental investigations and prosecutions. During the first year the Project will be funded by a $200,000 grant from U.S. EPA and $400,000 in funds and in-kind support from state and local resources including the California EPA Air Resources Board and Department of Toxic Substances Control, and local California District Attorneys’ Offices.
