FLORIDA FREIGHT COMPANY EXECUTIVE PLEADS GUILTY
On March 13, Angel Dante Fuentes, president of Executive Freight Consolidators of Miami, Fla., pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida in Miami to two counts of illegally transporting hazardous materials and one count of violating the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide and Rodenticide Act. Fuentes admitted that on Oct. 1, he illegally attempted to load 500 pounds of the pesticide “Dowicide” aboard an American Airlines passenger flight bound for Quito, Ecuador. The chemical was improperly labeled and was discovered when one of the 10 50-pound bags was torn open during loading. In addition, Fuentes admitted that he illegally offered an additional 2,000 pounds of Dowicide for transportation by ship from Port Everglades, Fla., on Oct. 6. Exposure to Dowicide has the potential to produce acute illness and can impair the ability of crew members to safely operate aircrafts and ships. When sentenced, Fuentes faces a maximum sentence of up to five years imprisonment on each of the illegal hazardous materials transportation charges and an additional year in prison on the illegal pesticide labeling charge. He also faces potential fines of up to $600,000. The case was investigated by EPA’s Criminal Investigation Division, The Department of Transportation Inspector General’s Office and the FBI.
