EPA TO HOLD A PUBLIC MEETING REGARDING THE PROPOSED PLAN AT THE TENNESSEE PRODUCTS SUPERFUND SITE IN CHATTANOOGA, HAMILTON COUNTY, TENNESSEE

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency will hold a public meeting to discuss the proposed plan for cleanup of Chattanooga Creek/Tennessee Products Superfund site in Chattanooga, Tennessee on Thursday, August 22, 2002. The public meeting will begin at 7:00 pm at Calvin Donaldson Elementary School, 927 West 37th Street in Chattanooga. EPA and Tennessee Department of Environmental Conservation representatives will discuss the investigation, cleanup alternatives, and the preferred remedy. All interested persons are encouraged to attend the meeting. A thirty (30) day public comment period began on August 12, 2002 and will end midnight September 10, 2002. During the comment period, EPA is accepting comments pertaining to the proposed plan. Comments should be addressed to Nestor Young, Remedial Project Manager, U.S. EPA Region 4, Waste Management Division, 11th Floor, 61 Forsyth Street, S.W., Atlanta, Georgia 30303. The site is located along the Alton Park/Piney Woods neighborhood in Chattanooga and consists of 2.5 miles of Chattanooga Creek and several coal-tar dumps in the Creek's flood plain. The Site was placed on the NPL using an Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) health advisory in 1995. Coal-tar wastes and process wastewater from the Tennessee Products plant were discharged to Chattanooga Creek. Most of the contamination in the creek occurs north of Hamill Road to Dobbs Branch. Contamination in the creek consists mainly of polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons and metals. The first phase of the cleanup of Chattanooga Creek was completed by EPA in November 1998.
