PHILADELPHIA – The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has awarded a $600,000 grant to Dickson City Borough, Lackawanna County, Pa. to help pay for improvements to the existing sewer system. The project will benefit about 6,100 residents.

The funding will help pay for extension of new sewer service to the Bell Mountain area of the borough, where residents now have malfunctioning on-lot septic systems. It will also help update an existing sewer system that is plagued by problems with overflows and sewage back-ups into homes during wet weather.

“We are pleased to help communities eliminate potential health hazards caused by malfunctioning on-lot septic systems and outdated sewer lines. By eliminating these hazards, we can make big strides in protecting public health and the environment,” said Donald S. Welsh, regional administrator for EPA’s mid-Atlantic region.

The grant will pay for 55 percent of the estimated $1.1 million project and the borough will use local funds to pay for the balance.
