Great Kanawha Resource Conservation and Development Area Receives $1,500 Environmental Education Grant from EPA

PHILADELPHIA - The Great Kanawha Resource Conservation and Development Area of Clendenin, Kanawha, W. Va., received a $1,500 grant to incorporate watershed education into the science curriculum in at Pinch Elementary School.

The goal of the program, coordinated by the Blue Creek Watershed Association, is to educate teachers, students and residents about the watershed and how its condition affects public health and the health of the entire ecosystem.

The project will reach 225 students in grades three through five who will present what they have learned to other classrooms and parents.

“The Great Kanawha Resource Conservation and Development Area is to be commended for bringing the important message of watershed preservation to students and area residents. Learning how different areas of a watershed depend on one another is an important lesson for everyone,” said Donald S. Welsh, administrator for EPA”s mid-Atlantic Region.

EPA’s education grant program is designed to stimulate grass-roots environmental educations. In the mid-Atlantic region - which includes Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, Pennsylvania and the District of Columbia - the 22 grant recipients included civic groups and non-profit organizations. Nationally, $2 million was awarded in 2001.
