National Corrective Action Conference Underway in New Orleans

      The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is hosting the annual National Corrective Action Conference at the Royal Sonesta Hotel in New Orleans June 24-25, 2003.  The conference builds on regional and national cleanup reforms by bringing stakeholders (facilities and regulators) involved with cleanups together, providing a forum for open and frank discussion on corrective action issues and to exchange information and experiences in streamlining the corrective action process.  

      More than 250 people registered for the conference.  These include state, local and tribal governments, industrial and environmental firms, as well as EPA representatives.

      During a ceremony, Marianne Lamont Horinko, EPA's Assistant Administrator for Solid Waste and Emergency Response, acknowledged companies who agreed to control two environmental indicators at all of their Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) Cleanup Program facilities by 2005.  The indicators are the migration of contaminated groundwater as well as any unacceptable human health exposures. Companies participating include BP, Chevron Texaco, ConocoPhillips, Crompton Corporation, Delphi Corporation, ExxonMobil, General Motors and Occidental Chemical Corporation.

      "Today's subject matter is at the cutting edge of everything we are trying to do in the management of waste in this country. It uses innovation and partnerships, the hallmark of EPA's 21st Century approach," Horinko said. "It stresses voluntary compliance so that market forces will find the cheapest and most efficient solutions to today's environmental challenges.  The one-size-fits all environmental solution is now a thing of the past."

      The RCRA Corrective Action Program is addressing stabilization and cleanup of facilities nationwide through the use of some innovative and streamlining tools and processes to provide a protective environment for all.  

      Dramatic progress has been made to date with a total of 844 facilities (which represents 49 percent of the 1714 baseline facilities) achieving a "yes" for both environmental indicator goals by 2005. EPA and its state, local and tribal government partners are working with industries to make this happen.
