EPA Issues Stop Sale on Disinfectant/Sanitizer

(08/29/03) The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency ordered Clean Control Corp., of Warner Robbins, Ga., to immediately stop selling a commercial disinfectant and sanitizer product because of the potential for bacterial contamination from use of the product in hospital, health care, dairy, restaurant and day care settings. The order affects Odo-Ban Ready-to-Use Disinfectant/Cleaner (EPA Reg. No. 66243-1). The product currently is registered by EPA for use on surfaces such as counter tops, bed frames, walls, and floors, in hospitals, medical and dental offices, day care centers and other health care facilities. The product is not used on critical medical devices. During the course of testing this product, EPA determined that two of the three lots tested are contaminated with the microorganisms Bacillus subtilis, Bacillus pumilus, and Bacillus amyloliquefaciens. All three Bacillus species may cause infections in immuno-compromised or traumatized patients. At this time, neither the EPA nor the Center for Disease Control and Prevention has received any reports regarding incidents linking Bacillus infections to use of this product. The EPA order immediately halts sale by the manufacturer of the product until the EPA can further evaluate the extent of the contamination and requires the manufacturer to recall the product.
