Release Date: 9/17/2005
Contact Information: For more information contact the Office of External Affairs at (214) 665-2200.
The Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality, the Environmental Protection Agency and local officials are coordinating curbside pickup of household hazardous materials in St. Tammany and Jefferson parishes.
The pickups are scheduled to begin on Sept. 17. Because of the large number of materials expected, there is no street-by-street timetable for when the materials will be hauled off.
Materials to be picked up include electronics, batteries, computer hardware, paint, cleaning solvents and lawn and garden products.
These materials should put in separated piles. Containers should be clearly marked. Leaking containers should be put into plastic bags to prevent spills. Refrigerators should be emptied. If food cannot be removed from refrigerators, it will be handled by qualified contractors.
Items that will not be picked up include: animal manure and carcasses, human waste and other biological items, needles, and spoiled food or damaged items.
