EPA Orders Chinatown Business to Stop Selling Unregistered Pesticide

PHILADELPHIA – The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency issued a Stop Sale, Use or Removal Order against Ding Ho Company, Inc. of the Chinatown section of Philadelphia, Pa. The company, a delicatessen and grocery store, has been ordered to immediately stop the sale and distribution of napthalene ball, an unregistered pesticide product.

The unregistered pesticide was discovered during a marketplace inspection by the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture, which referred the case to EPA’s mid-Atlantic regional office. EPA confirmed the product, being offered for sale and distribution by Ding Ho Company, Inc., was not properly registered with EPA.

This case is part of EPA’s national effort to curtail the sale and distribution of unregistered pesticides that may pose health risks to the public, and particularly children, due to inadequate labeling and packaging. EPA is working with state and local officials to stop the sale of unregistered pesticides and warn communities of the hazards of such products.

Under the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA), any pesticide product must be registered with EPA before it is distributed or sold, except under very limited circumstances. The registration requirements are designed to avoid the unreasonable adverse effects on human health and the environment, to ensure proper labeling of pesticidal products (including instructions on safe application), and to prevent false, misleading, or unverifiable claims about pesticides.
