EPA AND ANDERSON CHEMICAL SIGN AGREEMENT TO DEVELOP
NEW DETERGENTS UNDER DESIGN FOR ENVIRONMENT PROGRAM
NEW DETERGENTS UNDER DESIGN FOR ENVIRONMENT PROGRAM
EPA’s Office of Pollution Prevention and Toxics (OPPT) recently signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Anderson Chemical Co., Litchfield, Minn., to develop and promote laundry detergents with minimized environmental impacts for institutional cleaners. Under the MOU, EPA will provide technical advice and support in the development of these products for Anderson Chemical’s “Total Impact Program.” Specifically, Anderson Chemical Co. has agreed to formulate products based on chemistries that use no alkali; incorporate a neutral pH detergent enhanced with natural enzyme systems and surfactants that biodegrade; and use oxygen-based bleaching systems and biodegradable softeners. Additional environmental benefits associated with the products include increased water and energy efficiencies and extended fabric life. As part of its agreement with EPA, Anderson also has agreed to enhance its environmental stewardship program with its customers. The voluntary agreement was established under EPA’s Design for the Environment (DfE) program. EPA’s DfE program engages several industry sectors, including institutional and industrial laundries, garment care, automotive refinishing, electronics and
printing. For more information on the DfE programs, contact www.epa.gov/dfe or call 202-260-3374.
