Glen Cove to Receive EPA Grant to Assess Brownfields Sites

(03087) NEW YORK, N.Y. – The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) today presented a $200,000 grant to the city of Glen Cove, New York, to assist in assessing multiple brownfields sites considered ideal for redevelopment, once any contamination is identified and addressed. “Through the Brownfields Program, abandoned and underutilized facilities can be cleaned up and returned to productive use,” said EPA Regional Administrator Jane M. Kenny. “With today’s grant, Glen Cove gains additional assistance for its efforts to revitalize and redevelop its brownfields, ultimately making this community safer and creating jobs.” Glen Cove has received three other brownfields grants from EPA. In 1997, the Glen Cove Creek area received $200,000 to assess and redevelop 214 acres at 11 sites. Glen Cove was chosen as a Showcase Community in 1998, receiving an additional $400,000, which included the salary of a staff person to assist with brownfields redevelopment. And in 2000, the town received an additional $150,000 in supplemental funds for the assessment pilot. Under the 2002 Small Business Liability Relief and Brownfields Revitalization Act, EPA provides financial assistance to eligible applicants through four competitive grant programs: assessment grants, revolving loan fund grants, cleanup grants and job training grants. This legislation gives communities the tools they need to reclaim and restore thousands of brownfield sites, including low-risk petroleum sites. It also allows local governments and nonprofit organizations to apply for funding, greatly expanding eligibility for assistance. $166.6 million was set aside for brownfields grants in 2003.
