EPA ANNOUNCES FIRST SYSTEM TO MODEL DIFFERENT
AIR POLLUTANTS SIMULTANEOUSLY
EPA’s Office of Research and Development has just announced the availability of the first air quality modeling system to simulate the dynamics of different pollutants at the same time. The computer-based system, called “Models-3,” will enable government, industry and academic officials to simulate a real-world atmosphere with various mixes of auto and industry pollutants like smog, acid rain and soot. EPA believes the system will give environmental managers more speed and flexibility in finding solutions to pollution problems; A unique “plug and play” feature will allow users to customize modeling systems to suit their needs. Among other things, users can simulate weather patterns -- using three-dimensional visualization -- to see how pollutants are transported from one state to another across a region or subcontinent. EPA is already looking at ways to expand Models-3 capabilities: One way is to develop a multimedia system to track a pollutant’s entire path from source, then through air, water and land, to its final destination. Models-3 was developed by EPA’s National Exposure Research Laboratory in Research Triangle Park, N.C.
