NEWS MEDIA ADVISORY
(Lenexa, Kan., April 8, 2013) - EPA Region 7 and the Kansas City Chiefs today announced Extra Yard for the Environment, the football club’s sustainability initiative. The program is designed to devise and implement new green policies for the Kansas City Chiefs while raising awareness for green efforts at Arrowhead Stadium, the University of Kansas Hospital Training Complex and for fans at home.
To launch Extra Yard for the Environment, the Chiefs will host a community-wide recycling drive at Arrowhead Stadium on Saturday, April 20 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. As part of the kickoff for Earth Day on Monday, April 22, EPA will join the Chiefs, along with a number of other local vendors, to help facilitate a one-stop recycling opportunity for metro-area residents.
Individuals are encouraged to preview the list of participating vendors below and the items they will be accepting to see how they can take full advantage of this recycling opportunity. All recycling, with the exception of noted electronics recycling, is free of charge.
Since the Chiefs began implementing and tracking sustainability efforts more than two years ago, the organization has put an emphasis on becoming a more socially-responsible corporate citizen. In that time, waste diversion (the amount of waste that is diverted from landfills through recycling, composting, and other means) has increased from 11 percent to 44 percent. In doing so, the club has formed relationships with like-minded community allies that have helped make the upcoming recycling event possible.
“Becoming a more environmentally-conscious organization has been and continues to be a long-term goal for us,” Chiefs President Mark Donovan said. “We want to be a positive example for recycling and sustainability efforts in the community. The Extra Yard for the Environment program and this recycling drive ensure that we are well on our way to having a positive environmental impact in Kansas City and throughout the region. We want to thank all the organizations involved for their recycling efforts and for helping make this event possible.”

The Chiefs are joining sport teams across the nation to encourage the public to conserve resources and slow climate change through recycling. The Earth Day event provides Kansas City area residents an opportunity to reuse and recycle waste material and keep it out of landfills. Landfills are one of the largest contributors of methane gas, which has a negative effect on climate change.
