EPA fines Vallejo company for violating hazardous waste regulations

SAN FRANCISCO - The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency yesterday fined a Vallejo company, Jeffco Painting & Coating, Inc., $8,852 for violating federal and state hazardous waste regulations.

The EPA fined Jeffco for violations which included failure to conduct annual hazardous waste training for staff, improperly handling hazardous waste containers, and failing to report hazardous waste information to the agency, in violation of the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act.

The company, located at 1260 Railroad Ave. in Vallejo, has been in business since 1978. Jeffco performs abrasive blasting and coating services for construction and transportation projects, as well as for other industries.

"Proper waste handling is critical to protecting public health and the environment, and we're committed to ensure that companies handling hazardous waste comply with the rules," said Jeff Scott, director of the EPA's Waste Division in the Pacific Southwest Region. "We are pleased Jeffco acted quickly to correct the violations."

The EPA discovered the violations during an inspection of the facility in June 2003.

Facilities that generate more than 2,200 pounds of hazardous waste or more than 2.2 pounds of acute hazardous waste per month -- waste that even in very small amounts can cause severe health effects -- are required to report to the EPA at least every two years the quantities, nature, and disposition of their hazardous wastes.
