WASHINGTON – The District of Columbia has settled EPA complaints over violations of underground storage tank regulations at five fueling stations.

Under the administrative settlement agreement, D.C. has agreed to pay a $32,000 penalty and complete a supplemental environmental project at the five facilities, located at 125 O Street, S.E, 3420 14th St., N.W, 5000 Overlook Avenue, S.W, 2200 Adams Place, N.E., and 115 5th Street, N.E.

This $98,400 project includes consolidating fuel operations, improving training and installing remote-operated cameras and other fuel leak detection equipment.

In its September 1998 administrative complaints, EPA alleged violations of federal and District regulations designed to prevent, detect, and control leaks of petroleum and other hazardous materials from underground tanks.

With millions of gallons of fuel stored in underground tanks throughout the U.S., underground storage tank leaks pose a constant threat to land and water resources. EPA’s spill prevention regulations are designed to reduce the serious health and environmental risks of oil and petroleum product leaks and spills.
