The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced today that a removal action will begin at the Virginia Carolina (V.C.) Chemical site in Wadesboro, Anson County, North Carolina during the week of January 15, 2001. A removal is a short-term cleanup intended to stabilize or clean up a site that poses an imminent and substantial threat to human health or the environment. The removal will take place under the authority and direction of the Agency's Emergency Response and Removal Branch (ERRB).

The removal will include:

    • restricting access to the facility;
    • sampling and analysis of soil and groundwater;
    • removal of dilapidated structures; and
    • evaluation of soil and groundwater remediation options.
V.C. Chemical, an inactive fertilizer manufacturing facility, operated from 1908 to 1945. The property was sold in 1945. The facility is located on Stanback Ferry Road in Wadesboro. EPA was contacted by the North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources in October 1999 to evaluate the site for possible removal action. Contaminants of concern include lead and arsenic.
