(San Francisco)-- The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA) will recognize the pollution prevention and energy saving achievements of several major businesses and organizations, including the County of San Diego, at a March 27 ceremony hosted by the San Diego Convention Center. They are all participants in Green Lights, U.S. EPA's voluntary program which encourages investments in lighting upgrades that save energy, reduce pollution from electric power plants, and cut operating costs.
The organizations include Sony Electronics Inc., the University of San Diego, SAIC, Petco Animal Supplies, Pacific Bell, Toyota Motor Sales USA, San Diego Gas & Electric, the San Diego Unified School District, and the San Diego Convention Center.
With financial assistance from San Diego Gas and Electric, the Convention Center has recently installed new energy-saving lights throughout its buildings and grounds, which is expected to cut the Center's electricity use by over a million kilowatt-hours a year. This will save the Center over $97,000 on electricity bills every year from now on. All this was accomplished while actually improving lighting levels. Meanwhile, this helps San Diego Gas and Electric keep its operating costs down by reducing the need to build new electrical generating facilities.
The ceremony will be the high point of a Green Lights participants workshop jointly sponsored by U.S. EPA, San Diego Gas and Electric, and the San Diego Convention Center. There are currently over 2,000 Green Lights participants nationwide, and roughly 240 within California.
Members of the news media are invited to attend the recognition ceremony and tour the San Diego Convention Center.
Ceremony Time: 11:00 a.m. - 12:00 noon, Wednesday, March 27
Location: San Diego Convention Center
Room 15A - Mezzanine
111 West Harbor Dr., San Diego
