PHILADELPHIA - - For the eleventh year in a row, the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency joined other exhibitors at Philadelphia Flower Show which runs through March 10. The doors opened on Sunday to a wash of light, color, scents and award-winning exhibits.
“EPA is honored to be recognized with Philadelphia Horticulture Society’s Award of Merit in the non-academic educational category. We have a dedicated team of staff members who work year round protecting the environment and who also dedicate time to create an exhibit that brings environmental protection concepts alive,” said Donald S. Welsh, EPA mid-Atlantic regional administrator.
EPA’s exhibit, is inspired by a Japanese tea garden with a pond, bog garden, fountain, and a visually delightful mixture of native plants including fringe trees and redbud. The use of a water garden emphasizes the ability of the home gardener to aid in the restoration of our nations waters.
The exhibit is full of green landscaping tips. Mixed with the beauty of the teahouse and the native azaleas are tips for managing storm water, integrating pest management, reducing environmental harm, saving time and money, and leaving gardeners with healthier places.
EPA has also designed a website which includes information on environmentally friendly gardening, its benefits and how to get started. The website is an expanded on-line version of The Gardener's Guide to a Healthier Environment, one of EPA’s most popular handouts at past flower shows. Photographs of natural landscaping used in residential settings are featured.
