BOSTON - The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced that work has stopped for the winter at the Centredale Manor Restoration Project in North Providence, R.I. Before winter weather impeded work progress, approximately 900 feet of the tailrace were reconstructed and capped. Work will resume in the spring to complete reconstruction and capping of the remaining 150 feet of the tailrace.
This phase of the cleanup, which focuses on reconstruction of the tailrace (an industrial canal) behind Centredale Manor, began in the fall and has been conducted by the potentially responsible parties at the site. EPA has been overseeing the work.
Under EPA oversight, Loureiro Engineering Associates of Milford, CT, the contractor hired by the responsible parties to undertake the construction work, completed the following key elements of the cleanup plan:
- Control of the storm drain run off and sedimentation entering the tailrace through the installation of a new drain pipe and a sediment trap at the north end of the tailrace.
- Reconstruction of approximately 900 feet of the tailrace.
- Construction of a protective cap over the tailrace area.
The cleanup site is located on Smith Street in North Providence and includes the Woonasquatucket River and the floodplain between Route 44 downstream to and including Lyman Mill Dam. If you should have any questions during the winter months, please feel free to contact Ted Bazenas, EPA's On-Scene Coordinator at (617) 918-1034.
