(San Francisco)--The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
(U.S. EPA) today announced that a Technical Assistance Grant
(TAG) has been awarded to the Frontier Fertilizer Superfund
Oversight Group, Davis, Calif.
"This grant will give the people living in the community an
opportunity to participate more fully in the decision-making
process," said Jeff Zelikson, U.S. EPA's regional hazardous waste
management division director. "It should result in better
decisions and greater public confidence in the actions taken to
protect public health and the environment."
The grant will allow the coalition to hire a technical
advisor to assist it in reviewing investigation and cleanup
activities at the Frontier Fertilizer Superfund site.
The TAG will be matched by $12,000 in community funds and
will cover a three-year period. The technical advisor will
analyze and review proposed cleanup measures and report to the
Group.
In planning and implementing site-specific cleanup efforts,
U.S. EPA seeks comments from citizens who live near these sites
and therefore have a vested interest in cleanup actions being
considered. A better understanding of the technical issues
concerning a hazardous waste site in their area helps citizens to
provide thoughtful, informed comments.
