Lee County Public Service Authority Awarded $1.2 Million Grant From EPA

PHILADELPHIA -- The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency awarded an $1,187,812 grant to the Lee County Public Service Authority, Virginia, to fund the construction of two membrane filtration water treatment facilities that will serve the Rose Hill community and western Lee County.

Bradley Campbell, EPA’s mid-Atlantic regional administrator, said: “Everyone has a right to expect clean and safe tap water. The construction of these water treatment plants will fulfill this expectation for western Lee County residents.”

Rose Hill has been under a boil-water notice since 1993 because of inadequately treated drinking water. One of two proposed new drinking water treatment plants is Blue Springs drinking water treatment plant. It will provide safe drinking water for 840 residents in Rose Hill.

The residents of Lee County, between Cumberland Gap and Rose Hill, have inadequate service because their existing water company has inadequate capacity. As a result of this project, a second drinking water plant will be built to provide safe drinking water to that area. The plant is named after the source of the drinking water, Kentucky Virginia Stone Quarry.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture is providing a low interest loan to fund the local share of the project costs.
