CHICAGO (Nov. 2, 2005) — U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Region 5 has cited Blommer Chocolate Co. for alleged clean-air violations at the company's chocolate products factory at 600 W. Kinzie St., Chicago.
EPA alleges that on Sept. 1-2, 2005, an EPA inspector observed visible particulate emissions (dust) from Blommer's grinders that exceeded limits for opacity, which is the amount of light obscured by the emissions. The inspection was done in response to a citizen complaint regarding odor and visible emissions.
These are preliminary findings of violations. To resolve them, EPA may issue a compliance order, assess an administrative penalty or bring suit against the company. Blommer has 30 days from receipt of the notice to meet with EPA to discuss resolving the allegations.
Inhaling high concentrations of particulates can affect children, the elderly and people with heart and lung diseases the most. |
