CENTERVILLE, Pa. -- A $261,000 grant from the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency will be used to construct a wastewater collection system for the Village of Centerville, Cumberland Valley Township, Bedford County, Pennsylvania.
“This grant is an important step in improving the water quality and public health of Centerville residents,” said Bradley Campbell, regional administrator for EPA’s mid-Atlantic region.
The new collection and treatment system will replace current on-lot septic systems. Sixty-six percent of the septic systems are malfunctioning and some sewers are discharging directly to the surface. This is particularly alarming since about 22 of the homes in the village use private wells and/or springs for their drinking water.
The proposed project will serve 66 homes, one restaurant, and one former school facility that is being converted to other public uses. To treat the wastewater, the majority of the solids will be collected in a septic tank and treated at wastewater treatment facility in City of Cumberland, Maryland. Wastewater in the new Centerville system will be further cleaned by passing through a recirculating sand filter and then discharged into a man-made wetland, to further clean and filter the water.
Construction of the collection and treatment system is scheduled to begin in August 2000. The grant, awarded to Cumberland Valley Township, will pay for 55 percent of the project costs.
