PHILADELPHIA – Americans will celebrate Earth Day in a variety of ways
on April 22, 2002. Prominent among these observances will be festivals, workshops, environmental field trips, lectures on emerging science, stream bank restoration, concerts and art exhibits about the earth, and news reports on environmental progress.
“Earth Day is an appropriate time to recognize the efforts of citizen volunteers in helping to improve our environment,” said Donald S. Welsh, mid-Atlantic regional administrator for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. “The actions of volunteers have contributed to the tremendous progress that has been made in protecting
our air, land, wetlands, and water.”
The first Earth Day in 1970 brought attention to the fragile nature of our environment. An overwhelming response continued America’s environmental awareness, leading the way to protective environmental laws and environmental organizations.
For the annual observance of Earth Day, organizations across the country schedule activities throughout April. Students are learning about the progress of
reducing pollution, seniors citizens are discussing how to make their lawns and gardens environmentally friendly, and families are becoming more aware that the actions they
take at home, work, school, and in their cars affect their watershed.
You too can celebrate Earth Day in your way - - this week, this month and every day. For more information about the many activities planned, check out our website at www.epa.gov/region3/ or the Earth Day network site or www.earthday.net.
